Day Trips from Doonbeg

  • Bunratty Castle & Folk Park

    Approximately an hours drive away, Bunratty Castle is a great spot to take the family for the day. Visit the acclaimed 15th iconic Bunratty Castle - the most complete and authentic castle in Ireland. Also on the grounds is a living village, with rural farmhouses, village shops, and pet farms. In the evenings, they host a Medieval Banquet. Tickets can be booked online or upon arrival.

  • Tour of North Clare

    The Cliffs of Moher are the second most visited tourist attraction and really should not be missed while visiting Co. Clare.

    Tour under the Cliffs of Moher (this can be done as an hour cruise or alternatively a day trip to the Aran Islands)

  • The Cliffs of Moher

    The famous Cliffs of Moher are about a 45 minute drive away from Doonbeg. There is a fully accessible visitor center, and 800m of safe paved pathways and amazing viewing areas including access to O’Brien’s Tower and rooftop viewing where one can see five counties on a clear day. Tickets can be purchased online ahead of time or upon arrival. There is secure parking for your vehicle.

  • Burren National Park

    About an hour away, the Burren National Park covers 1,800 hectares. Explore the park’s fascinating flora and geology, discover the walking trails, or learn about how they manage the land to protect nature in the National Park. Their Information Point in Corofin, a village 8 km from the park, is open April to September and provides a free shuttle bus, which runs from May to September.   • Afternoon Tea at Adare Manor

    Enjoy a lovely and fancy day out with afternoon high tea at Adare Manor. Savor an assortment of finger sandwiches, scones and jam, and adorable desserts. Adare offers a children’s menu as well. Book for a smaller party on their website, or email dining@adaremanor.com for a larger reservation. Book ahead of time as these spots fill up fast!

  • Afternoon Tea at Dromoland Castle

    Enjoy afternoon tea at another beautiful hotel roughly an hour from Doonbeg. Named after a long-standing member of their staff, Mrs. White’s afternoon tea features a fabulous selection of treats. Call +353 61 368144 or email sales@dromoland.ie for a reservation.

  • Kilrush

    Scattery Island trips are wonderful with options to go on an exciting Rib trip around the island or a bespoke cruise in a luxury motor yacht with gourmet lunch and a secluded mooring off the beaten track.

    The Vandeleur Walled Garden is a beautifully restored walled garden in the woodlands of Kilrush. Entrance is free and there is a lovely café and great plants for sale.

  • West Clare to Loop Head Peninsula

    Visit Loop Head Peninsula. The Lighthouse has guided tours and the views are spectacular. The Bridges of Ross now have a gravel footpath along the cliff to get the full advantage of the views.

    Kilbaha Gallery is a must-see place with local and other artwork of a very high standard for sale. It also houses a small museum of local artifacts relating to times past.

  • Doonbeg Heritage Trail

    The Doonbeg Heritage Trail is a wonderful insight into Doonbeg in the past. It is totally interactive and we are sure you will recognize some of the places you will be familiar with.

Horseback Riding

There are two horse riding experiences to choose from. Either a beach ride along the beautiful two mile stretch of Doughmore Beach at the back of the resort or alternatively, a cross country ride at the equestrian centre which is about a 20 minute car drive from the resort. Please note that the equestrian centre uses English Saddles only.

Falconry and Fishing

Walk with falcons and feel like royals of old for an hour. Feed the birds and have them perch on your protected arm.

Grab a fishing rod and try your luck at one of the ponds on property.

Archery and Clay Pigeon Shooting

Archery: Aim for the bulls-eye when you participate in one of our Archery sessions that take place on the resort. It’s great fun and appeals to all age groups.
Clay Pigeon Shooting: Our American cousins call it ‘skeet shooting’! This thrilling sport calls for concentration, a keen eye and quick reactions.

Whether you are using Doonbeg as a home-base or making it a stop on a greater Irish adventure, there are many amazing towns to check out.

Dingle

About a 2.5 hour drive from Doonbeg via the Killimer Car Ferry Terminal. Dingle is a cute fishing village with many family activities. We recommend checking out the Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium; Beehive Huts, where you can hold and feed baby lambs and watch a sheepdog herd; see the sights on Slea Head Drive; take a boat ride around Dingle Bay; shop in the town; and see some places Star Wars was filmed. Some places to eat are the Boatyard Restaurant, Doyles Seafood, and Murphy’s Ice Cream for dessert.

Killarney

Killarney is a great town full of many restaurants and shops. There are many family-friendly activities, including: Jaunting Car Rides; Innisfallen Island Tour; Muckross Abbey; a pet farm; and exploring the town. A nice hotel with pretty views and family-friendly room configurations is the Lake Hotel, about a 10 minute drive from city center. Killarney is the start/end of the famous Ring of Kerry drive, offering gorgeous views of the wild Atlantic and the majestic Irish landscape.

Kinsale

With its charming and colorful streets, stunning harbor views, and a rich history, this seaside town offers an array of activities that are sure to delight visitors of all ages. Families can explore the historic Charles Fort, an imposing 17th-century fortress that will transport you back in time, or take a scenic boat tour to appreciate Kinsale's natural beauty. For a taste of the local cuisine, don't miss the opportunity to sample fresh seafood at one of the town's renowned restaurants. And if you're looking for a little adventure, Kinsale's array of water sports, including kayaking and paddleboarding, will keep the whole family entertained.

Cashel

Home to the Rock of Cashel, the town features many fun activities. Sitting on the top of a prominent green hill in the heart of County Tipperary, the Rock of Cashel will allow you to step back in time. In addition to the Rock, we recommend checking out the Cashel Folk Village; Hore Abbey; nearby Cahir Castle; and the Mitchelstown Caves. Mikey Ryan’s Bar and Kitchen is a great place to grab a bite to eat.
